With A Meteorite Dial, The OMEGA Speedmaster Moonphase Is Literally Out Of This World

A timepiece famed for space exploration gets a dial sourced from the stars.

The OMEGA Speedmaster’s stature as the only watch to be worn on the moon is well documented. Since the 1969 moon landing, the model has solidified its presence as a top choice for astronauts and space agencies. A watch that is eternally connected to the wonders of the night sky, OMEGA is now celebrating that authentic affinity with the release of the Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite.

Celestial Object

Each watch harnesses two forms of meteorite and is powered by an innovative OMEGA calibre.

OMEGA’s Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite collection is offered in two choices in stainless steel. Each 43mm timepiece harnesses two forms of meteorite and is powered by an innovative new calibre. The movement is designed to display lunar cycles as seen from both the northern and southern hemispheres.

The magic though begins on the face of each timepiece. A dial formed of iron meteorite reveals a pattern of ribbon-like flecks that is unique in every watch. OMEGA though takes a step further colouring this ancient space material with either a black PVD or galvanic grey coating.

From there, the Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite takes a truly captivating direction. Its display has been reworked with the Moonphase indicator as 6 o’ clock showing a pair of cabochon Moons crafted from genuine pieces of Moon meteorite. As they turn, they reveal the changing illuminations seen in the northern and southern hemispheres.

Detailed Presentation

The timepiece displays lunar cycles as seen from both the northern and southern hemispheres.

But this isn’t the only cool bit about the new model. The devil they say is in the details and if you pay close attention, you’ll notice the stars in the background are positioned exactly as they were on the night that Apollo 11 reached the Moon in 1969 – as seen from OMEGA’s watchmaking home in Bienne, Switzerland.

A brand new manual-winding Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 9914 drives all functions of the watch.

The 3 o’clock subdial offers a 60-minute and 12-hour recorder. There is a Small Seconds subdial at 9 o’clock with a date display featuring a red anodized aluminium hand. Driving all of these impressive functions, is a brand-new manual-winding Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 9914.

Built by OMEGA, the movement, including its special finish, is visible through the flat sapphire crystal on the caseback. The anti-magnetic movement guarantees the brand’s finest standard of precision and chronometric performance.

Two Distinct Styles

Omega Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite

The Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite is available in two iterations.

In terms of design differences, the two pieces that form the collection stand out on their own. One features a black PVD coated meteorite dial on a matching coated base is presented with 18K white gold hands and hour markers. This provides a nice contrast to the piece as well as the black ceramic bezel with white enamel tachymeter scale.

The other features a galvanic grey coated meteorite dial on a blue PVD coated base paired with a blue ceramic bezel and white enamel tachymeter scale. This model’s 18K gold hour markers and hour-minute hands are blue PVD coated, with subdial hands in 18K white gold.

Each watch is worn on a polished and brushed bracelet with OMEGA’S patented comfort release adjustment system. It represents the perfect finishing touch for an inspired timepiece. An exemplary Speedmaster that stays in touch with its iconic Moon legacy, every day and in every hemisphere on Earth.
