10% smaller than the original RM 016, the RM 16-02 still possesses the signature sculptural rectangular shape.
First introduced in 2007, the RM 016 made its debut as the first rectangular watch in Richard Mille’s collection. With a distinctive design and ultra-thin silhouette, the timepiece immediately struck a chord with watch aficionados.
The RM 016 appealed for a number of reasons, chief of which its design – it was not just stunning to look at but also tapered to fit the wrist. With an expressive character along with Richard Mille’s technical and distinguishing hallmarks, the timepiece went on to become an icon that appealed to both men and women.
Now 18 years on, Richard Mille unveils a new artistic vision for its rectangular timepiece with the RM 16-02 Automatic Extraflat. Resolutely contemporary in style, the RM 16-02 boasts a sobriety of line that conceals a wealth of technical sophistication.

The RM 16-02 stands apart for its unique urban aesthetic.
Although a new reinterpretation of the iconic model, the new timepiece boasts a 30-metre water resistance and a 10% smaller footprint compared to the original model. Its dimensions of 36 x 45.65mm perfectly espouses the wrist – sitting flat while worn – while enhancing the model’s characteristic lines.
Mechanics-wise, this is where Richard Mille’s expertise takes pride of place. All functions of the RM 16-02 Automatic Extraflat are powered by the Calibre CRMA9, the 15th and latest addition to the family of movements from Richard Mille. Developed entirely in[1]house, the engine has been specifically imagined for the RM 16-02.
Boasting openworked elements, the brand meticulously constructed this lightweight skeletonised automatic movement. The intricate design as well as performance demonstrates Richard Mille’s technical prowess in the field.

The baseplate further enhances the modern feel of the timepiece while simultaneously revealing the technical complexity at the heart of the creation.
Reportedly requiring five years of development, the calibre boasts a microblasted grade 5 titanium baseplate treated with a grey electroplasma finish. The unique process requires over two hours of meticulous milling per plate and numerous manual operations to achieve its openworked design.
The painstaking process undoubtedly pays dividends as its intricate construction shines through the skeletonised dial. More than just offering a visual lightness as well as robustness, the movement itself has undergone rigorous 10-year aging and shock[1]resistance tests. It also offers a power reserve of 50 hours.
On the surface, the RM 16-02 is offered in two iterations – one crafted with a satin[1]finished Grade 5 titanium case and the other in a Quartz TPT in a new terracotta colour. This unique array is achieved via a complex process involving silica threads impregnated with a coloured matrix and stacked at a 45° angle.
A stunning and visual masterpiece, the overall look of the RM 16-02 is further accentuated by its hour markers. By utilising thread-like decals that appear to run through the movement’s skeletonised maze, the hours are virtually brought to life. The RM 16-02’s signature look boasts its rich complexity, featuring impressive clean lines and a multitude of technical refinements second to none.
