George Russell Brings His Racing Identity To The Wrist With A New IWC Schaffhausen Collab

The driver gets a pair of a limited-edition Pilot’s watches.

When racing drivers collaborate with watchmakers, the result often leans heavily on branding. IWC Schaffhausen’s partnership with George Russell takes a more restrained approach. Rather than producing a statement piece built around novelty, the two limited-edition Pilot’s Watches reflect a quieter translation of Russell’s identity — one rooted in consistency, precision and personal symbolism.

Developed in collaboration with IWC’s creative team, the chronograph and automatic models mark Russell’s first direct involvement in watch design. Both are unified by a shared visual language rather than overt references to motorsport, signalling a project shaped by reflection rather than speed alone.

The Meaning Of Blue

Central to the design is a distinctive shade of blue — a colour that has followed Russell throughout his racing career. After briefly adopting a black helmet when joining Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS, Russell returned to the blue-dominant design that has become synonymous with his presence on the Formula One grid.

That same blue now appears subtly across both watches, used for dial markings, luminescence and straps. It is less an accent than a signature — a visual shorthand for Russell’s reputation as a driver who balances composure with competitiveness.

A Personal Reference

The most explicit personal detail appears on the reverse of each watch. The titanium case backs are engraved with the number 63, Russell’s racing number since his karting days. Rather than being foregrounded, the engraving functions as a private reference — visible to the wearer, but not immediately to the outside world.

It is a reminder that these editions are not designed to announce achievement, but to acknowledge it. Now, while the watches are not positioned as technical showcases, material choice remains significant.

Both models are housed in black zirconium oxide ceramic — a material IWC has worked with for decades — chosen for its durability and lightness. Elements such as the crown and pushers are crafted from Ceratanium®, a proprietary material developed to combine strength with wearability.

Two Interpretations, One Perspective

The chronograph and automatic models differ in function and scale, yet share the same visual restraint. Their dials are deliberately uncluttered, prioritising legibility and balance over spectacle. Blue rubber straps complete the design, offering a practical contrast to the dark ceramic cases while reinforcing the collaboration’s central theme.

Both watches are limited editions, though their appeal lies less in scarcity than in coherence — the sense that every detail serves a reason rather than a narrative hook.

A Measured Collaboration

Since joining the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team in 2022, Russell has established himself as one of the sport’s most consistent performers, with multiple race wins and podium finishes to his name. His collaboration with IWC mirrors that trajectory: confident, controlled and deliberate.

Rather than attempting to redefine either brand, the partnership offers a moment of alignment — between driver and watchmaker, speed and design, identity and restraint. For Russell, it represents a milestone expressed not through excess, but through clarity.
