Franck Muller Vanguard Damascus Collection Celebrates The Art Of Ancient Craftsmanship

Franck Muller unveils the Vanguard Damascus collection, transforming legendary Damascus steel into contemporary timepieces inspired by ancient craftsmanship.

Franck Muller introduces the Vanguard Damascus collection, a striking exploration of material, craftsmanship and innovation that transforms the legendary Damascus steel into a contemporary expression of haute horlogerie. Inspired by the ancient artistry behind Samurai swords, the collection reflects the Maison’s ability to reinterpret traditional techniques through modern watchmaking.

Recognised for its distinctive layered patterns and exceptional durability, Damascus steel gives the collection its defining character. Franck Muller transforms the material into unique timepieces where every surface reveals its own character and individuality.

Available in the Vanguard Damascus and Vanguard Damascus Racing variations, the collection combines the bold identity of the Vanguard line with the technical sophistication of one of watchmaking’s most fascinating materials.

The Art Of Damascus Steel, Reimagined

With origins dating back to the ancient city of Damascus, the material has long been admired for its strength and distinctive patterns. Traditionally associated with exceptional blades, Damascus steel now finds a new expression within fine watchmaking.

For the Vanguard Damascus collection, Franck Muller developed a sophisticated alloy specifically suited for haute horlogerie. Crafted from austenitic, non-magnetic stainless steel, the material allows the movement to operate without interference while offering resistance against shocks.

The Maison creates its Damascus steel through a patented process that combines two different steel powders layered together. This approach results in a refined material that balances technical performance with visual artistry.

A Timepiece Defined By Individuality

One of the defining qualities of the Vanguard Damascus collection is that no two watches share the exact same pattern. Through an exclusive in-house process, Franck Muller reveals the natural layers of the material through a specialised treatment.

Once immersed in an acid bath, the contrasting layers emerge across the case and dial, creating intricate motifs unique to each creation. The case undergoes the process for ten minutes, while the dial receives a five-minute treatment to achieve its distinctive appearance.

As a result, Damascus steel becomes more than a material choice. It becomes a signature element that gives each watch its own identity, reflecting the relationship between craftsmanship and individuality.

Vanguard Damascus And Vanguard Damascus Racing

The Vanguard Damascus showcases Franck Muller’s signature tonneau-shaped silhouette crafted entirely from Damascus steel. Measuring 42.5mm by 52.7mm, the timepiece presents a bold presence while maintaining the refined character associated with the Vanguard collection.

Its Damascus steel dial is paired with brass applique numerals, while the watch displays hours, minutes, seconds and a date indication at six o’clock. Powering the timepiece is the self-winding MVT FM 800-DT movement, featuring a bidirectional rotor system, a 42-hour power reserve and detailed finishing throughout its components.

Meanwhile, the Vanguard Damascus Racing introduces a more dynamic interpretation through an openworked design inspired by the Vanguard Racing Skeleton. The skeletonised construction reveals the intricate architecture of the movement, while numerals crafted from Damascus steel further highlight the collection’s signature material.

Powered by the self-winding MVT FM 2800-SQ01 movement, the model showcases refined finishing including Côtes de Genève decoration, perlage and polished details, reflecting Franck Muller’s dedication to both technical precision and aesthetic excellence.

Both creations are completed with black grosgrain leather straps and Damascus steel folding buckles, creating a seamless continuation of the material’s distinctive texture throughout the design.
