ORIS BIG CROWN PROPILOT CALIBRE 114
Continuing with the evolution of Oris’ brilliantly made in-house movements, the new Calibre 114 makes its debut in the Big Crown ProPilot Calibre 114. The watchmaker’s Calibres 110 through 113 – known in horological circles for their lofty 10-day power reserve with a non-linear indicator – provide the base on which Oris’ fifth in-house developed movement is built upon. In Calibre 114, the lengthy power reserve is delivered by a single oversized barrel, while its non-linear indicator is managed by a specially designed worm gear. The big draw of the handwound mechanical movement, however, is the GMT or 24-hour second time-zone function with half-hour indications. It’s an invaluable inclusion as this immediately positions the Big Crown ProPilot Calibre 114 as a utilitarian travel watch to cities with half-hour time zones such Canada, India and Australia. Arranged around the periphery of the dial, the 24-hour second time-zone is indicated by a red-tipped central pointer hour hand that stays true to the classic aviation spirit of the Big Crown. Looks wise, the Big Crown ProPilot Calibre 114 definitely measures up, with the dark anthracite or black dial encapsulated in a 44mm-wide stainless steel case that provides a nice contrast to the white of the hands and Arabic numerals, as well as the red accents on the power reserve indicator and GMT arrow. Combine this with a beautiful deep chocolate Louisiana crocodile leather strap and we have ourselves an all-round good-looking travel companion.
