Few timepieces have remained as iconic as the TAG Heuer Monaco. When the model made its debut in 1969, it broke conventions with its bold square case, left-side crown, and the revolutionary Calibre 11—the first automatic chronograph in a square, water-resistant case.
Two years later, it earned cinematic immortality on Steven McQueen’s wrist in Le Mans, alongside his Gulf-liveried Porsche 917K and racing suit. This trio—watch, car, and suit—cemented the Monaco as a symbol of speed and style.
This year sees the Swiss watch brand paying homage to that pivotal moment of history with the Monaco Chronograph x Gulf. A convergence of motorsport and cinematic heritage as well as Swiss watchmaking innovation, the timepiece encapsulates the legacy of Steve McQueen, Gulf Racing, and TAG Heuer’s pioneering spirit.
A Nod To The Past
Limited to 971 pieces—honouring the 1971 release of Le Mans— the new edition revives this legacy through a design steeped in authenticity. The dial features fine-grained silver with vertical Gulf stripes and the vintage Heuer logo, reinforcing its historic roots. The left-positioned crown remains a distinctive hallmark, a nod to its 1969 origin.
Crafted from sandblasted grade-2 titanium, the 39mm case is lightweight and matte-finished, evoking the tools and textures of racing paddocks. The strap is made from Nomex®, the fire-resistant material used in racing suits—including those worn on the original Le Mans set. Sourced from Hinchman, the same American manufacturer that outfitted McQueen, the strap completes the circle of motorsport authenticity. A blue perforated calfskin strap is also included for a more classic option.
Racing Synergy
The Gulf livery—light blue and bright orange—is one of motorsport’s most iconic designs, made legendary by drivers like Jo Siffert, McQueen’s racing advisor and friend. Siffert’s influence extended beyond the track, shaping the Monaco’s on-screen presence and TAG Heuer’s racing heritage.
This release also coincides with a milestone: the Formula 1 TAG Heuer Grand Prix de Monaco, marking the first time the prestigious race carries a title sponsor. With this, TAG Heuer reaffirms its deep ties to racing’s past and future.
The Monaco Chronograph x Gulf isn’t just a watch—it’s a celebration of courage, craftsmanship, and cultural legacy. With its rare blend of design, history, and emotion, it embodies everything the Monaco has come to stand for over the decades.
