Richard Mille
Following the format of 2017 where Richard Mille only presented one watch at the SIHH, this year they offered up the RM 53-01 Tourbillon Pablo Mac Donough. For those who don’t already know Pablo Mac Donough is a world class athlete in the sport of Polo and like most of Richard Mille’s friends/ambassadors, the watch is meant to be worn. As you would imagine horses with large powerful hooves and the fact that players routinely swing around a hard wooden mallet would pose a problem for pretty much any mechanical watch. The innovation in this RM 53-01 is near transparent as it involves the Sappire crystal. The movement within deals with shocks by a combination of a carbon TPT case and steel braided cables but the crystal is a stunning innovation comprising of two sapphire layers with a polyvinyl film in the middle that holds it together. As a comparison, this innovation replaces a metal alloy hood used as protection on the previous RM 53.
