Richard Mille and Rafael Nadal share a few things in common – power, precision and the drive to be the best. Recognising these shared values, the manufacturer has created a special timepiece for the tennis player limited to 50 exclusive pieces. Naturally, the RM 27-03 Tourbillon Rafael Nadal is made with the best materials and, in this case, Carbon TPT – a sturdy material made of multiple layers of carbon fibre that’s resistant to microcracks and splits – is used to form the unibody baseplate caseband. This robust baseplate is the foundation of the manual winding Calibre RM27- 03 tourbillon movement that volleys for 70 hours. Looking carefully at the skeletonised movement, Nadal’s personal emblem – a silhouette of a bull’s head – has been fashioned from the bridges encircling the barrel, the great wheel and the mechanical winding tourbillon.
As impressive as the movement is, it’s hard to miss the striking Quartz TPT case in brilliant red and yellow, echoing the colours of the Spanish flag. The vibrant hues are achieved by saturating fine silica layers with tinted resin before heated to 120°C. After milling and finishing, the material is united with two Nitril O-rings, 12 spline screws in grade five titanium and 316L stainless steel washers to form a stalwart case that’s water-resistant up to 50m deep.
