The Swiss luxury watchmaker has just won the internationally recognized Red Dot Award in product design for its coveted Big Bang Meca-10 Magic Gold, a technically interesting watch that features a movement inspired by the classic Meccano construction sets that was conceived by English businessman, inventor and politician, Frank Hornby. The decision was made by a jury of 40 professors, journalists and independent designers which saw Hublot triumph over 5,500 creations submitted by 54 participants hailing from different countries.
Following the announcement, Hublot’s CEO Ricardo Guadalupe had this to say: “This award tops off an exceptional year for Hublot by recognising the expertise of our watchmakers, engineers and designers. I would like to thank them all. I would also like to thank Professor Dr. Peter Zec and the Red Dot Award jury for choosing Hublot from such a distinguished line up of competitors. And now back to work, we have a title to defend!” The prize will be officially presented in front of 1,200 guests during the Red Dot Gala ceremony slated take place on July 3rd this year. The Big Bang Meca-10 Magic Gold timepiece will also be exhibited in the Red Dot Design Museum located in Essen, Germany.
Big, bold and brash, the Hublot Big Bang Meca-10 Magic Gold features a specially-developed alloy known as Magic Gold. This unique blend of gold with ceramic results in a material with a hardness rating of 1,000 Vickers, making this particular alloy twice as durable as regular 18K gold. Powering this revolutionary timepiece is the skeletonised hand-wound manufacture movement known as the HUB1201 that was developed by Hublot’s creative team of watchmakers based in Nyon, Switzerland. The movement consists of 223 parts and comes fitted with two mainspring barrels that offer a power reserve of 10 days. This is linked to a unique rack-style system displayed at 12 o’clock that will move gradually towards the right as the movement winds down. Once the power reserve reaches its last 48 hours, a red marker will appear in the gear located towards 3 o’clock to remind the user to wind to watch.
