The thing about elegant dress watches is that the best ones are simple yet refined, like those in the A Lange & Söhne Saxonia line. Because their elegance stems from having little on show in the first place, this makes updating them slightly tricky. Which is why the German watchmaker’s two new Saxonia models are such a triumph in subtlety.
The Saxonia Thin, with its clean dial and svelte 6.2mm thickness, is so minimal that it could work with both day and night attire. But its new dial colour, which the brand calls black gold flux, adds a big dollop of glamour, thanks to spangles that shimmer like stars in the night sky. This is the first time the brand has produced a black variant of this aventurine-like glass; some might recall a Saxonia Thin with a blue-gold flux dial back in 2018. This model is available only in white gold and 40mm.
The Saxonia Outsize Date is getting a less dramatic facelift, swapping out its previously black dials for silver ones in 38.5mm in white or pink gold cases. The large date window is located at 12 o’clock with small seconds in a subdial at 6 o’clock, allowing for the kind of symmetry the legendary Lange 1 – also famous for its outsize date – doesn’t provide.
There are just enough changes here to keep the Saxonia collection relevant, yet still restrained enough to be your go-to accessories for most occasions.
