The MPO Presents The Works Of Antonín Dvořák For Its February 2025 Concert

The works of Antonín Dvořák will be presented by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) this February 2025. This special performance will be led conductor Junichi Hirokami and will feature famed Colombian cellist Santiago Cañón-Valencia.

Themed the Dvořák Double, the concert solidifies the MPO’s intent of nurturing an appreciation towards classical music.  The concert will feature two compositions by the Czech composer. Both Cello Concerto in B minor and Symphony No.9 in E minor are considered the most famous of their kind.

Junichi Hirokami will lead Dvořák Double as his first concert as the orchestra’s Music Director. Cello Concerto – a work premiered in 1896 by the London Philharmonic and conducted by Dvořák himself – will open the concert.

A concerto that brims with melodic invention, the performance will also witness the debut of Cañón-Valencia on the DFP stage. The Colombian cello virtuoso has thus far garnered a number of prestigious awards.

The prolific artist/composer has also demonstrated his music calibre across the globe with world-renowned orchestras.  He also has four commercial albums under his belt. In addition to taking the stage for the concert, Cañón-Valencia will also conduct a cello masterclass at the DFP.

Closing the performance is Symphony No.9 – From The New World, one of the most famous 19th century symphonies. Receiving its premiere in New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1893. A poem written by Longfellow titled The Song of Hiawatha and the American Indians’ dance inspired parts of this symphony, resulting in energetic and exhilarating movements with melodic inventiveness.
