The Desaru Coast Gourmet Series 2023 proudly features three highly acclaimed chefs who have made their mark in the culinary world, including notable mentions in the first MICHELIN Guide Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Kicking off the series is Chef Johnson Wong, founder of gēn Penang and Communal Table by gēn, both recognized establishments in this year’s guide. Following him is Michelin-starred Chef Su Kim Hock of Au Jardin, Penang, for Series II, while Series III will be led by Chef Raymond Tham, co-founder and executive chef of Skillet KL and Beta. These renowned chefs bring their expertise and creativity to curate unforgettable dining experiences that highlight the richness of Malaysian cuisine.

Series I of the 2023 Gourmet Series kicks off in May with Chef Johnson Wong, known for his innovative contemporary Malaysian dishes that have garnered attention from fine-dining enthusiasts. From May 26 to 28, Chef Wong will be at Sea.Fire.Salt. Anantara Desaru Coast Resort & Villas, presenting two intimate dinner seatings on May 26 and 27, followed by a brunch on May 28. The aptly themed “Straits Food Redefined,” prepared in a collaborative four-hand style, will showcase Chef Wong’s playful and inventive elevations of Peranakan classics. The seaside brunch menu will feature a decadent array of dishes that celebrate the coastal charm of Desaru.

From succulent oysters with cucumber broth, herb oil, and floral vinegar to a delightful twist on Nyonya acar with whipped tofu and house bread, the menu is a celebration of flavours. Char-grilled prawns with a coconut butter sauce infused with gula melaka, tender racks of lamb, rendang tok braised lamb cutlets, and nasi ulam with salted duck egg are just a few of the remarkable creations that await guests.

As an integral part of the dining experience, guests will enjoy impeccable wine pairings by Moët & Chandon, carefully selected by a sommelier. For RM450 nett per person, they can enjoy either a dinner or brunch session, with an additional RM200 nett for the wine pairings. For guests traveling from Singapore to experience the brunch, a special package rate of RM780 nett per person is available, which includes brunch and return ferry tickets. Adding the wine pairings is an option for an additional RM200 nett.
