Last year, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) presented a harmonious Valentine’s Serenade concert. This year sees the talented musicians continuing the theme with Essential Love Stories.
The special performance with Resident Conductor Gerard Salonga at the helm takes place on Saturday, 15 February 2025 at 8pm at the Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP), KLCC. Essential Love Stories will see the MPO weave its magic with orchestral renditions that encapsulate romance through some of the world’s most distinguished works.
From Russian opera to Hollywood films and everything in between, the MPO will reveal enticing tales of love that will resonate the hearts of lovers. Among the works listed in the programme is Marianelli’s Pride And Prejudice Suite, taken from the 2005 film of the same name.

Also on the cards is a rendition of Umebayashi’s heartbreaking waltz, Yumeji’s Theme from the exhilarating Cantonese film In The Mood For Love produced in 2000. Lovers of classics will appreciate Rota’s Romeo And Juliet, a marvellously sophisticated composition from 1968. This composition merges a classic with modern music finesse, making it fresh yet recognisable.
Rounding up the set list for Essential Love Stories is Waller-Bridge’s Emma Suite, taken from the movie Emma and the charming Intermezzo and Barcarolle taken from The Tales of Hoffmann. The latter is the final opera by French composer Offenbach.
Salonga and the MPO will also perform Prokofiev’s lovely and delightful Cinderella Suite to bring the concert to a close. But then again, there is always the encore to look forward to, which may well spring a surprise.
Tickets and further details can be found at the official Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) website.
