As cocktail festivals become increasingly commonplace across Asia, Penang Cocktail Week continues to distinguish itself through a strong sense of place. Returning from 15 to 20 September, the festival’s fourth edition shifts the conversation away from headline guest bartenders and marquee brands to something less tangible but arguably more enduring: Penang’s culture of hospitality.
Framed by the theme Welcome Home, this year’s programme draws inspiration from everyday local expressions that reflect how the island welcomes visitors. Five pillars — Kaki Lang, Makan Angin, Jiak, Kongsi and Lau Juak — shape a week of guest shifts, food collaborations, neighbourhood experiences, educational tastings and a closing celebration at Hin Bus Depot.

Together, they present a portrait of Penang that extends well beyond its acclaimed bar scene, inviting visitors to experience the island through its people, traditions and distinctive culinary identity.
The approach reflects a broader evolution in cocktail culture, where the experience increasingly extends beyond what’s in the glass to encompass the stories, communities and destinations behind it. As discerning travellers seek more meaningful encounters, festivals such as this are becoming cultural touchpoints as much as drinks-led events, offering a richer understanding of the places that host them.

Bartenders and industry professionals from across Asia and beyond, including Montreal, Hong Kong, Taipei, Bangkok and Singapore, are expected to take part, reinforcing Penang’s growing stature as one of the region’s most distinctive destinations for contemporary drinks culture. Four editions in, Penang Cocktail Week has evolved into more than an industry gathering, serving as a showcase of the island’s creative energy and its enduring reputation for generous, effortless hospitality.
