MOOOI
Meshmatics Chandelier
We love Marcel Wanders – his work at the Mondrian Doha, unveiled last year, is just the latest in a long line of feasts for the senses – but one of the best things he probably did was co-found Moooi, the Dutch furniture, interior, and lighting modern design company, in 2001. In the time since, Moooi (the name is derived from the Dutch word for ‘beautiful’) has inspired and beguile with its innovative, playful and daring works produced with a veritable who’s who of the design world. The Meshmatics Chandelier, designed by Rick Tegelaar, who was also responsible for the brand’s Filigree Floor Lamp, is conceptually simple but so Moooi in effect. Made of galvanised steel and brass, the wire mesh structure reflects and diffuses the light of the integrated LED with an elegant grace. It is, in every way, a stunning transformation of what is essentially wire netting into a structure that creates shimmering reflections and casts an elaborate net of shadows onto the ceiling. This is a chandelier that really sets the mood.
