The Pangkor Laut Resort, a private island paradise, reaches new heights in the world of opera, welcoming the presence of internationally renowned artists this October. Commencing from October 20th to October 22nd and recurring annually for a unique weekend, Opera in Paradise 2023 promises an unforgettable symphony experience against the backdrop of this secluded island retreat.
At this year’s first-ever Opera in Paradise weekend, visitors to the resort will have the unique opportunity to witness the exceptional talent of three headlining artists: Andrea Griminelli, Belle Voci, and Michael Austin. These extraordinary performers will showcase their talents on a genuinely distinctive stage, situated within the timeless paradise island that reflects the unique philosophy of Pangkor Laut Resort – “one island, one resort.” In this idyllic setting characterised by sun, sea, sand, and unspoiled two-million-year-old rainforests, treasured moments will come to life.
Andrea Griminelli is an accomplished Italian flautist with a 34-year career known for his emotional interpretations and remarkable technical skill, resulting in prestigious awards such as a Grammy, the Prix de Paris, and an Italian Knighthood. His association with the legendary Luciano Pavarotti includes a significant moment when, at the age of 25, he was personally invited by Pavarotti to perform at Madison Square Garden in New York. Notably, Griminelli will also take on the role of Musical Director for the event which pays homage to Pavarotti’s historic island performance, adding a special dimension to the occasion.
The duo of ‘beautiful voices’ – Belle Voci comprising Emily Burnett and Sophie Rowland, are passionate about expanding the reach of opera and classical music to new audiences, reflecting their dedication to sharing the beauty of these genres. They unexpectedly made it to the live final of The Voice UK in 2018, where they sang “My Heart Will Go On” with their coach Jennifer Hudson, reaching over five million viewers. Notable career highlights include performing the National Anthem at the 2019 FA Cup Final and supporting tenor Alfie Boe OBE, with whom they dueted on stage.
Michael Austin is an American artist and theatre performer known for his significant achievements. In the world of theatre, he made history by becoming the sole African-American actor to portray Othello during his time. Additionally, he was the first non-Chinese performer to sing a leading role in a Chinese opera, specifically in “Mulan Palms.” These remarkable accomplishments underscore his talent and groundbreaking contributions to the performing arts.
The lineup for Opera in Paradise 2023 pays homage to a memorable semi-private performance by the iconic tenor Luciano Pavarotti, who graced the Pangkor Laut Resort’s grounds to celebrate the resort’s second phase of development back in 1994. To this day, the resort commemorates this legendary tenor by naming its most magnificent suite, boasting the finest views, in his honour. Three decades later, the chosen performers for the 2023 Opera in Paradise weekend serve as a fitting tribute to the event that solidified the legend and mystique of the Pangkor Laut Resort.
The Opera in Paradise Weekend, which will take place from 20th to 22nd October 2023 (Friday to Sunday), offers a range of accommodation options, starting from MYR 6,500++ for a Garden Villa and going up to MYR 30,000++ for a luxurious 3-bedroom Hilltop Estate.
To enjoy accommodation throughout the event, a minimum of a two-night stay is necessary. The package includes daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner for two adults at designated restaurants, as well as a return scheduled speedboat transfer to and from Marina Island Pangkor. Guests will also be treated to welcome cocktails on October 21 at the Royal Bay Beach Club, along with a poolside opera concert on the same day, followed by a delightful dinner.
