With the Lunar New Year here, global luxury group Kering has enlisted Chinese contemporary artist Jiang Miao for a special art project. Combining the profound wisdom of Eastern philosophy with the exploratory skill of contemporary art, the collaboration creates a beautiful cycle of energy with multicultural codes in tandem with the approach of the New Year.
Layers Of Creativity
As a contemporary creator attracting a lot of attention in China, Jiang Miao is the perfect collaborator for Kering. Her distinctive personal style in the art world is well-established with her solid academic background and unique knife-carved acrylic painting skill.
For this art project her perspective of the natural elements, energy and colours are presented through an intricate layering process. Containing over 20 layers, each superimposed upon one another creating a stereoscopic spatial art piece.
“Colour is energy,” states the artist. “My abstract work is an extreme experiment with colour. The continuous stacking and covering of tones compress every time segment illogically together, pierced by a knife. Each knife mark is a colour that penetrates time.”<
Full Circle
For instance, the “Taoist Trinity and the Self” series – one of her representative series – depicts a chaotic and dynamic space. The dots, lines, and surfaces within the paintings become ordered around the spiral core, resembling the concept of Taiji, which produces all things, giving birth to the cycle of life.
It’s symbolic of the recurring flow of life. This echoes the meaning of the Lunar New Year – the restart of the first and the renewal of all things. The unique purple in this work is formed through the compression of multiple layers of colour. It ultimately creates a natural and innate hue which cannot be seen in stereoscopic space.
Jiang Miao regards the work as a complete life grown in nature. Through her creative lens, the artist hopes the new year arrives with an auspicious purple aura coming from the East, bringing an infinite accumulation of beauty.
Shining A Spotlight
The collaboration between Kering and Jiang Miao is the latest in a series of art programs from the luxury group. From 2020, Kering’s art program for Lunar New Year has demonstrated this value. Past collaborators included paper-cut artist Wen Qiwen, calligrapher Xu Jing and Chinese painter Peng Wei.
Last year, Chen Ke, prominent female contemporary Chinese artist Chen Ke unveiled a crossover art project titled Dragon Boat. These diverse and profound New Year works provide a platform for female artists to showcase their talents.
It also demonstrates one of the core values of Kering, which is empowering women. Through its ongoing implementation of the Women In Motion program, Kering is committed to shining a light on female artists’ remarkable contributions to culture and the arts.
