Since its inception in December 2006, the BMW Shorties has transformed the lives of many amateur film makers in the local film making industry. To commemorate the 11th anniversary of this cultural initiative, BMW Group Malaysia decided to organise its first-ever film festival at APW Bangsar.
Held on 16 December, the BMW Shorties Film Festival saw individuals from all walks of life coming in droves to participate in this memorable experience which included stellar performances featuring popular local bands Jumero, Kaya (The Band), and Azmyl Yunor & Orkes Padu. In between bites served by home-grown food trucks Curbside Cantina and The Mothership, attendees also had a field day participating in various interesting  film and photography-related workshops led by professionals from Canon Malaysia and the EFXCO.
As the festival drew to a close, it was finally time for the grand award ceremony which recognises the budding talents of the local film industry. This year’s theme ‘Vision’ drew in a total nine finalists out of 90 submissions, and the big winner for the night was Lim Kean Hian’s ‘Never Was the Shade’ which tells the story of two half-brothers with different beliefs coming to terms about the death of their father. In addition to the Grand Prize honour, ‘Never Was the Shade’ also took home the awards for Best Actor, Best Screenplay, and Best Editing.
