This Milanese sweet bread load was thought to have first emerged from the ovens in the court of the Sforzas, the ruling family of 15th century Milan and have appeared in the arts, including Italian writings of 18th century illuminist Pietro Verri who referred to it as “Pan de Ton” or bread of luxury. It has since emerged as a staple treat for Christmas and New Year, served in vertically cut wedges to be enjoyed with sweet hot beverages or sweet wine.
