For decades, the chronograph has occupied a familiar place within horology as a tool rooted in speed, measurement and competition. Richard Mille, however, has never approached watchmaking through convention alone. Since the brand’s founding in 2001, its watches have reframed high horology through the lenses of architecture, engineering and contemporary culture, attracting collectors who see watches not merely as symbols of heritage, but as expressions of modern identity.
The RM 72-01 Lifestyle In-House Chronograph continues that trajectory in a more nuanced register. Rather than positioning itself solely as a technical showcase, the watch considers how time is experienced today by individuals who move fluidly between business, culture and leisure. In this context, the RM 72-01 feels less like an instrument for measuring time than a companion to a life shaped by rhythm, adaptability and balance.
A SENSE OF FLOW

The RM 72-01 Lifestyle In-House Chronograph introduces a fluid interpretation of time, where technical precision meets contemporary rhythm.
At first glance, the RM 72-01 distinguishes itself through an unusual visual cadence. The dial emphasises the numerals three, eight and eleven, establishing what Richard Mille describes as a subtle “three-beat measure”. The effect feels almost musical, reinforced by three coloured counters — blue for seconds, orange for minutes and green for hours — arranged in a composition that appears dynamic rather than rigidly symmetrical.
That rhythm-driven philosophy extends beyond aesthetics. The watch emerged through a creative dialogue with choreographer Benjamin Millepied and composer Thomas Roussel, whose collaborative project W I T H I N explored the emotional and physical movement of time.

Filmed against the stark landscape of Joshua Tree, Millepied’s choreography translated the cyclical energy of the chronograph into motion, while Roussel composed an orchestral score around the pulse of the watch itself, recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra.
The result is a chronograph that approaches time less as a linear sequence than as a flow of moments and transitions. It is a perspective that resonates with a younger generation of collectors across cities such as Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Hong Kong, where luxury is increasingly defined by design intelligence and cultural fluency rather than overt display.
ENGINEERING WITH RESTRAINT

Three coloured counters — blue, orange and green — structure the RM 72-01’s dial, echoing a subtle threebeat visual cadence.
Beneath the artistic framing lies one of Richard Mille’s most significant technical achievements to date. The RM 72-01 houses the Calibre CRMC1, the brand’s first fully in-house flyback chronograph movement, developed over 30 months in Les Breuleux.
What distinguishes the movement is not simply its complexity, but the restraint with which that complexity is expressed. Comprising 425 components, the calibre maintains an exceptionally slim 6.05 mm profile — a notable feat in a category often associated with mechanical density and visual excess. The openworked architecture reveals a platinum rotor and six-column wheel, exposing the movement with the clarity of contemporary industrial design.

Offered in titanium, ceramic and 5N red gold, the RM 72-01 reflects a modern luxury language defined by versatility and ease of wear.
Richard Mille further rethinks traditional chronograph construction through its patented double oscillating pinion system. By separating the minutes and hours from the seconds wheel, the mechanism minimises energy loss when the chronograph is engaged, preserving the watch’s 50-hour power reserve. More importantly, it creates a tactile experience that feels smooth, precise and almost effortless. It is engineered not only for performance, but for ease of use.
This emphasis on seamless usability reflects a broader evolution in luxury watchmaking. Increasingly, collectors are drawn not only to mechanical prowess, but to how discreetly and intuitively that prowess integrates into daily life. Available in combinations of titanium, black or white ceramic and 5N red gold, the RM 72-01 balances architectural presence with surprising ease on the wrist.
QUIET CONFIDENCE

Ultimately, the RM 72-01 reflects a broader shift within contemporary watchmaking itself. The most compelling watches today no longer speak only of technical achievement but rather articulate a way of living.
Richard Mille has long excelled at creating watches connected to the worlds of sport, art and performance. With the RM 72-01, the brand sharpens that approach into something more introspective and lifestyle-oriented. It is a watch defined less by spectacle than by an ability to move between different tempos with clarity, precision and ease.
Whether worn against the pace of Kuala Lumpur’s business districts or during quieter moments of travel and leisure, the RM 72-01 captures a distinctly modern expression of luxury. It is defined less by achievement than by the ease with which it moves between different tempos of life.
