He’s stomped through Tokyo, faced off against King Kong, and now, the King of Monsters has made a surprise appearance in Kuala Lumpur. To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Godzilla, Japan’s TOHO Studios has teamed up with EQ, one of Malaysia’s top luxury hotels, in a playful and stylish collaboration that brings pop culture and five-star hospitality together in one unexpected roar.
A Legend, Reimagined
First appearing in 1954, Godzilla was born from post-war Japan’s deep anxieties. Conceived as a metaphor for the trauma of nuclear devastation, Godzilla became more than just a movie monster. Created by TOHO Studios, he emerged as a cultural icon that has stood the test of time, across the globe.
Over the past seven decades, Godzilla has starred in 38 films, countless video games and comics. The iconic film monster has become a global symbol of resilience, transformation, and epic-scale storytelling.
His reach extends far beyond the silver screen. Attractions like the Godzilla Interception Operation Awaji and the towering Godzilla head in Shinjuku, Tokyo, prove that fans across generations are still captivated by the King of Monsters.
Godzilla x EQ Kuala Lumpur
To mark this cinematic milestone, TOHO released a commemorative video celebrating Godzilla’s 70 years of destruction and drama. In a striking moment, the monster is seen moving across the Kuala Lumpur skyline, with EQ Hotel featured prominently, holding its own alongside the legendary Petronas Towers. It’s a brief but powerful appearance that sparked this unique collaboration between TOHO and EQ.
In honour of the occasion, EQ has unveiled a limited collection of Godzilla 70th Anniversary merchandise, including a commemorative T-shirt and vintage-style luggage stickers. These exclusives will be gifted to select guests and loyal supporters – the perfect souvenirs for anyone who wants to take a bit of movie history home with them. The hotel is also offering a limited ‘Monster Room Package’ until 30 December 2025.
A Toast To The King
EQ has also taken things a step further by introducing a limited-time signature cocktail at its award-winning rooftop bar, Sky51. Aptly named the “King of Monsters,” the drink is available in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions and pays tribute to Godzilla’s legacy while offering one of the best views in KL.
“We were absolutely delighted to see the world-famous monster romping through Kuala Lumpur and passing by EQ in TOHO Corporation’s commemorative video,” said Donald Lim, Chief Executive Officer of Equatorial Group.
“This unique cameo comes at a time when EQ has recently been in the news, being listed as one of the top 100 hotels in the world. We are especially proud to note that EQ is the only property in Malaysia to have made that list. Along with this moment of pop culture, we decided to have some fun and create some souvenirs. Special thanks go out to TOHO Corporation and TOHO Entertainment Asia for allowing us to do so.”
This collaboration between EQ and TOHO isn’t just about drinks and souvenirs. It also shows how pop culture can connect worlds. It brings together film history, local hospitality, and a global fanbase into a shared moment of celebration. For guests, it’s a chance to experience a bit of movie magic right in the heart of KL.
