The actress Meryl Streep took scathing aim at US President-elect Donald Trump when accepting her Golden Globe Cecil B. De Mille award just hours ago. Speaking to a stunned crowd of celebrities, Streep excoriated Trump for his mocking derision of a disabled New York Times journalist.
“And this instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing. Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose,” said Streep who ended the speech on an emotional note while quoting her close friend Carrie Fisher.
