The classic Oris Big Crown Pointer Date, now in a smaller 36mm case

Crowning glory

If you’re already a fan of the watch with the red rotor, then, you are no stranger to their pointer date. For many years, the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date has been a staple of their collection giving watch lovers a reliable and beautiful wristwatch that uses a pointer hand to indicate the date that surrounds the dial. This time however, they are bringing immense heritage value to the collection by offering a very classic looking Big Crown Pointer Date in 36mm.

Although Oris seems to be targeting women with the size of this watch, we think that it will most definitely catch the eyes of vintage watch lovers as most of the older watches were made around this size. Adding to its classical aesthetics, Oris has also added a domed sapphire crystal and the namesake Big Crown which was initially developed so pilots could easily set their watches even while wearing gloves. Being a pilot’s watch of course the dial is extremely legible but what we think is really interesting is the light green dial that was apparently inspired by a colour keyboard in Le Corbusier’s Polychromie architecturale.

Another interesting element of this Oris is the case in bronze; and as many of you will know bronze will age over time depending on its usage and its contact with the skin meaning over the years the watch will become one of a kind. We love this idea of pairing vintage aesthetics with the accuracy and reliability of modern Swiss-made movements and this watch certainly packs in a good deal of both. And although 36mm may seem like the size of a woman’s watch in this day and age, we do suggest men give it a try to see if it fits anyways; you might surprise yourself.
