A Lange & Söhne Triple Split

There can be no doubt that A Lange & Söhne is an utter powerhouse when it comes to mechanical complications and, this year, it has proven itself once again with the magnificent Triple Split. The Triple Split is the first of its kind in the world offering the rattrapante, or split-seconds function, to extend not just to the minutes but also to the hours.

Now, you may be asking yourself what possible instance would you need a split-seconds counter that extends to the hours. Well, on 17 July 2016, German triathlete, Jan Frodeno, achieved a new world record for the triathlon long distance in seven hours, 35 minutes and 39 seconds. Theoretically, you could have used the Triple Split to time not just Jan Frodeno but also the first runner up, Joe Skipper of Britain, who took 20 minutes and 44 seconds longer.

Although realistically the scenario of timing such an event with a watch like the Triple Split remains quite improbable, the point of the watch is for A Lange & Söhne to prove that it can. This is a prime example of how this German watchmaker is constantly pushing itself and mechanical innovation to the limits. And, just as a kicker, the Triple Split breaks its own house record of the Double Split, which in 2004 allowed the first comparative measurements with an aggregate duration of 30 minutes.
