Why Longines’ award-winning Avigation Bigeye will thrill aviation enthusiasts

Watchmaker with a knack for heritage pieces keeps its eye on the prize.

As the winner of the 2017 “Revival” Prize at the Grand Prix de l’Horlogerie de Geneve, the Avigation Bigeye chronograph showcases Longines’ knack for restoring the glory of vintage watches.

Mr. Walter von Känel, Longines President, receives the Prize “Revival” during the 2017 ceremony of the Grand Prix de l’Horlogerie de Genève.

Inspired by an archived reference from the 1930s, this latest addition to the Heritage collection takes the design elements of a classic pilot’s watch and fuses it with modern technology. The black dial makes its Super-Luminova-coated hour markers and rhodium-plated hands pop by contrast, and is further filled up with a running seconds register at 9 o’clock, 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock, and outsized 30-minute sub dial at 3 o’clock, from which the watch gets its “Bigeye” moniker.

The column wheel L688.2 calibre was made specially for Longines by ETA, and beats at 28,800 bph and comes with a 54-hour power reserve.

The 41mm steel case, large pushers and crown and light brown calf leather strap all reinforce the fact that this is still a tool watch that honours its aviation heritage.
