3. Cannetille

A three-dimensional jewellery design which was inspired by the embroidery found on peasant garments, cannetille is a delicate craft that used gold wires and finely hammered sheets to create intricate structures within jewellery. Popular in the 1820s and 1830s, many believe cannetille hailed from France and England, while others believe it to be Indian or Portuguese in origin. Heavily featured in jewellery of that period, cannetille used motifs such as scrolls, coils, beehives and tendrils that were further embellished with brilliantly colourful gemstones, such as amethyst, chrysoberyl and Brazilian aquamarine, that would stand out against the simple gold wires.
