02: HIGH CONTRAST

Rei Kawakubo is only the second living designer after Yves Saint Laurent (whose show took place way back in 1983) to have a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. About 120 of her womenswear designs for Comme des Garcons, from as early as her first Paris show in 1981 right up to her current collection, will be on display. Her work explores the boundaries between East/West, male/ female, and past/present – dichotomies that are as familiar as her avant-garde creations are inaccessible. Although that’s entirely why we love her. Rei Kawakubo / Comme Des Garcons: Art Of The In-Between will be on display at The Met Fifth Avenue, New York City, from May 4 to Sept 4.
